Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) quantum dots (QDs) have been synthesized using a top-down method. Pristine QDs exhibit wavelength-dependent emission spectra. The nonlinear optical (NLO) behavior of hBN QDs has been investigated for the first time using the self-diffraction geometry of the fourwave mixing technique and z-scan method. The optical properties are modified upon functionalization with suitable thiol (−SH) and aromatic amine (−NHR) ligands. It has been found that the spectroscopic and NLO responses are influenced by the transfer of charge carriers between the ligand and base hBN moiety. Functionalized QDs give rise to red-shifted emission and possess an enhanced NLO response. QDs show a promising optical limiting response, which makes them useful as a coating in protective eyewear for intense lasers.

The violet phosphorus is a layered semiconductor material possessing a diverse range of exceptional physical properties. Until now, the nonlinear optical properties of violet phosphorus nanomaterials have been relatively scarce, and most of them were limited in the exploration of one single wavelength. In contrast, our study was based on the broadband nonlinear absorption characteristics of violet phosphorus nanomaterials from the ultraviolet to near-infrared waveband. In this paper, the two-dimensional violet phosphorus nanosheets were prepared by using the liquid-phase exfoliation method. The broadband (from ultraviolet to near-infrared) nonlinear optical properties of the two-dimensional violet phosphorus nanosheets were investigated by the openaperture Z-scan method. And the band gap values of the two-dimensional violet phosphorus were analyzed through experimental characterization and density-functional theory. The experimental results show that the two-dimensional VP nanosheets exhibit saturable and two-photon absorption. In the ultraviolet band, the two-dimensional violet phosphorus nanosheets exhibit the most excellent saturable absorption properties. This work had important implications in the fields of ultrafast lasers, microfabrication, nanofabrication, and optical limiting fields.

NbSe₂/PtTe₂ heterostructures as saturable absorbers for mid-infrared pulsed solid-state lasers

We have realized for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, a 2 µm nanosecond solid-state passive Q-switched Tm:YAP laser based on a NbSe2/PtTe2 heterojunction saturable absorber. At an incident pump power of 12.69 W, the Tm:YAP laser produces stable laser pulses with a minimum pulse width of 818 ns, a maximum single-pulse energy of 15.48 µJ, and a peak power of 18.93 W at a repetition rate of 79.44 kHz. The comparison results show enhanced saturable absorption performance compared to single NbSe2 (1 µs, 70.32 kHz) and single PtTe2 (1.31 µs, 71.97 kHz). The experimental results confirm that the NbSe2/PtTe2 heterojunction is a promising saturable absorption material that can be used to realize high-performance mid-infrared pulsed lasers. The resulting nanosecond 2 µm Q-switched pulsed laser will play an important role in atmospheric monitoring, lidar, and other fields, and can provide a strong driving force.
