3.1: A Novel Polarizer Glassestype 3D Displays with a Patterned Retarder

Abstract: To ameliorate the polarized glassless type 3D display with a patterned retarder, we strongly recommend the i-PR (in cell black stripe Patterned Retarder) structure. In 3D mode, this particular structure can improve vertical viewing angle. When 2D switching mode is expressed, luminance and visibility will ameliorate at the same time

“…The first technology is called a patterned retarder, which uses an additional polarization filter with a periodic pattern of orthogonal polarization in front of the display device. The patterned retarder separates the left-eye and right-eye images with vertical line-by-line polarizer structure with orthogonal polarization [8]. As a result, the vertical resolution of the 3D image is reduced to half of the 2D resolution if the observer watches it while wearing polarization glasses.…”

“…Instead of conventional two-dimensional (2D) sensing techniques, which record the intensity of the scene, passive 3D imaging also includes depth and directional information. Many techniques for 3D imaging have been proposed, such as holography and interferometry [1][2], two-view based stereoscopy [3] [4], and multi-view techniques for autostereoscopic 3D imaging [5] [6], to cite a few.…”

“…Nowadays, various kinds of commercial three-dimensional (3D) display are proposed to provide different left-eye and right-eye images separately to the corresponding eye of the observer [1][2]. Since the disparity between the perceived images from different views is one of the most important cues which induce the 3D perception to the observer, it is essential to establish an optically perfect isolation between those views for the realization of 3D display with a low level of visual fatigue.…”
