3,4-DHPEA-EA from Olea Europaea L. is effective against standard and clinical isolates of Staphylococcus sp

Abstract: BackgroundThe aim of the present work was to evaluate the antibacterial effect of 3,4-DHPEA-EA (methyl-4-(2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenethoxy)-2-oxoethyl)-3-formyl-2-methyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran-5-carboxylate), a derivate of oleuropein, against a range of Gram-positive bacteria, including ATCC strains, food and clinical isolates.MethodsThe minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 3,4-DHPEA-EA were determined by the broth microdilution method and the Bioscreen C.Results3,4-DHPEA-EA was effective against ATCC and clini… Show more

“…After evaluating the scientific evidence, the European Food Safety Authority deemed that HT is a protector of low‐density lipoprotein from oxidative damage . Recently, numerous in vitro studies and animal models have established that HT can prevent many diseases, due to its anticarcinogenic , anti‐inflammatory , and antimicrobial activities. In addition, protective activities have been described against high cholesterol , metabolic diseases , antigenotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and proapoptotic effects , oxidative stress , and digestive disorders .…”

“…We have recently shown that an extract from white grape juice could have a beneficial effect on radiocontrast medium toxicity in human renal proximal tubular cells [ 6 ] and exert neuroprotective effect in a mouse model of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis [ 7 ]. Due to the increased antibiotic resistance, the antimicrobial properties of natural compounds have been gaining attention: we have previously reported the antibacterial activity of polyphenols-rich natural products, including almonds [ 8 , 9 ], pistachios [ 10 ], Citrus plants [ 11 ], Vitis vinifera L. [ 12 ], Olea europaea L. [ 13 ], Citrus bergamia essential oil [ 14 ], and juice [ 15 ]. In particular, the identification of novel compounds with bactericidal rather than bacteriostatic effect has attracted interest in recent years.…”

“…as Elenolic acid and some of its derivatives (3,4-DHPE-HDCM-EA), have also been proven to possess stronger bactericidal potential compared with Oleuropein (Thielmann et al, 2017, Bisignano et al, 2014Mosele et al, 2014;De Marco et al, 2007;Soler-Rivas et al, 2000). In addition, it was shown that mixtures of phenols and secoiridoids exert greater antibacterial activity with respect to single compounds (Obied et al, 2007).…”
