34.2: Viewing‐Angle Compensation of IPS and Circularly Polarized VA‐LCDs Using a Novel Ultra‐Thin Homeotropically Aligned Liquid‐Crystalline Polymer Film

Abstract: We have developed a novel ultra-thin homeotropically aligned liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) film called "NV film". NV film allows In-Plane-Switching (IPS) and Circularly-Polarized Vertical-Alignment (CPVA) LCDs to have excellent viewing angle performance with only a slight increase in the total thickness just by attaching the film to the panel.

“…(+) C-plate, (À) A plate, biaxial compensation film or combination of multicompensation film may be used [48][49][50][51][52][53]. For MVA mode TFT-LCDs, negative LCs are aligned vertical to the substrate, thereby (+) Aplate, (À) C-plate, biaxial compensation film or combination of multi-compensation film may be adopted [54][55][56][57][58][59][60]. Different compensation films are used depending on sheet-to-sheet or rollto-roll manufacturing process and display performances.…”

“…Thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) is still the mainstream display technology because of its high yield, good size compatibility, long working time and low production cost [1]. TFT-LCD display modes mainly include Twisted Nematic (TN), Vertical Alignment (VA), In-Plane Switching (IPS) and Advanced Super Dimension Switch (ADS) [2,3]. The ADS display mode is widely used in large-scale, high-definition displays and LCD TVs due to its advantages of hard screen, high transmittance, large view angle (both horizontal and vertical can reach 178°) and high color expression [4,5].…”

“…The LCD image quality has been greatly improved owing to extensive research on many new modes, such as in-plane switching (IPS) mode [1], multi-domain vertical alignment (MVA) mode [1], fringe field switching (FFS) mode [2], and ADvanced Super Dimension Switch (ADS) mode. ADS mode LCD is the proprietary LCD technology of BOE, which was known to exhibit wide-viewing angle, high contrast ratio, high transmittance.…”
