389. Oxidations with sodium bismuthate : glycol fission and related reactions

Abstract: By w. RIGBY.Sodium bismuthate in an acid medium smoothly and selectively effects oxidations similar t o those brought about by lead tetra-acetate and periodic acid ; ap-glycols undergo fission t o aldehydes or ketones, acyloins to the derived carbonyl compound and carboxylic acid, and a-hydroxy-acids t o the lower aldehyde or ketone, all in good yield. Aldehydes are not further oxidised.

“…Lead tetraacetate (Reichstein, 1937) and sodium bismuthate (Rigby, 1950;Norymberski, Stubbs & West, 1953) have been widely employed for this purpose, but aqueous periodate has proved to be the most satisfactory reagent. Earlier workers (Fieser, Fields & Lieberman, 1944;Talbot & Eitingon, 1944) had reported little success with this reagent due to impurities which interfered with the.…”

“…In general, aldehydes are formed by bismuthate oxidation of a-hydroxycarboxylic acids as well as a-hydroxyketones (Rigby, 1950). The reaction is therefore of considerable interest in providing information on the nature of the acidic metabolites.…”
