3D blood flow characteristics in the carotid artery bifurcation assessed by flow‐sensitive 4D MRI at 3T

Abstract: To determine three-dimensional (3D) blood flow patterns in the carotid bifurcation, 10 healthy volunteers and nine patients with internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis ≥50% were examined by flow-sensitive 4D MRI at 3T. Absolute and mean blood velocities, pulsatility index (PI), and resistance index (RI) were measured in the common carotid arteries (CCAs) by duplex sonography (DS) and compared with flow-sensitive 4D MRI. Furthermore, 3D MRI blood flow patterns in the carotid bifurcation of volunteers and patien… Show more

“…Future work should include automated detection systems for vorticity and helicity and quantitative evaluation of flow patterns at the vessel wall. However, flow pattern grading was based on strategies that have previously been reported and successfully employed to detect and characterize abnormal carotid, 31 pulmonary, 32 and aortic flows. 33,34 Care was taken to screen all study subjects for abnormal valve morphology, such that three valves of recruited family members were discovered to have bicuspid or unicuspid morphology.…”

“…1). PC is not currently capable of providing accurate absolute measurements of WSS (18) and has been shown to underestimate blood flow velocities in the carotid bifurcation by 31-39% (19). An alternative approach for estimating WSS is to reconstruct a complex flow field via computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, using vascular geometries and input/output functions derived from noninvasive imaging data (20)(21)(22).…”
