3D Digital Heritage Models as Sustainable Scholarly Resources

Abstract: If virtual heritage is the application of virtual reality to cultural heritage, then one might assume that virtual heritage (and 3D digital heritage in general) successfully communicates the need to preserve the cultural significance of physical artefacts and intangible heritage. However, digital heritage models are seldom seen outside of conference presentations, one-off museum exhibitions, or digital reconstructions used in films and television programs. To understand why, we surveyed 1483 digital heritage p… Show more

“…Some scientists focus on the need to apply VR/AR technologies to science, in addition to the entertainment and corporate management spheres of application. It is proved that 3D models should be actively promoted as scientific resources and assets both as digital cultural artifacts and as tools to help the public explore the vital but often overlooked relationships between the created heritage and the natural world [18]. As can be seen, the integrated use of VR/AR technologies and tools in HR management and operational and technological business processes, both in the medium and strategic perspective, is the path to sustainable development.…”

“…Klaus Müller [10], said virtual museums no longer need walls, and "… Virtual museum 'spaces' can take on any shape they want, but they lack the conventional authority and emotion a museum building evokes." In the article, The Uses of Virtual Museums: The French Viewpoint, Roxane Bernier [11] provided more reasons for virtual museums: newfound freedom [12] from awkward display spaces; freedom from "limitations on objects"; and "indefinite storytelling." Mokre (1998) and Davallon (1998) also stress there are no physical constraints.…”

“…Moreover, it creates more opportunities and breaks the occupational boundary for collaboration between local communities and professionals [27][28][29]. Taking part in this kind of online community, people can share their knowledge of any aspects of cultural heritage with specialists in the field [30,31], but also gain more opportunities for education outreach [32]. In addition, communications among online communities showcase a far efficient way by being informed and getting feedback easier and faster [33].…”
