The paper presents the results of measuring the gearbox housing with the ATOS optical measuring system, the TRITOP system and the "TESA micro-hit 4-5-4" coordinate measuring machine. The aim of the study was to determine the differences in modern measuring systems and whether these differences affect the final measurement result when controlling parts of a complex configuration. At the beginning of the paper, the way of functioning of the used measuring systems and the results of research in this area are described. GOM Inspect software used for the ATOS and TRITOP measuring systems, while PC DMIS software used for the coordinate measuring machine. The analysis of the obtained results showed that there are significant differences in the measurement results and that the measuring systems used can't be applied with the same success to the measurement of parts of complex configuration such as the gearbox housing.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> This work starts from the request to have a physical high-resolution 3D model of the external, anthropoid coffin of the scribe Butehamon, held at the Museo Egizio, Turin. At the time of writing, a replica of the coffin, based on this survey work, functions as final and focal installation of the temporary exhibition Archeologia Invisibile of the Museo Egizio, Turin, running from March 2019 to January 2020. The replica acts as support for a micro-mapping installation meant to re-project a pattern of images onto the coffin’s surface, including the results of different radiometric and colourimetric analyses performed in the recent past by Museo Egizio and Musei Vaticani. This collaborative work encouraged a thorough discussion on the interaction between scientists and humanists engaged in the study of archaeological finds, on the needs and expectations of both sides, and on the technical problems relating to handling objects of different sizes.</p>

Featured Application: There has been an increased demand for, and there are potential benefits of, creating three-dimensional digital models of existing objects in the automotive, aerospace, cultural heritage, and medical industries. Non-contact data acquisition systems are in great demand owing to their higher data acquisition speed and movability. The application of unsuitable data acquisition may result in inaccurate data, thus making the reverse engineering ineffective and inefficient. Therefore, it is crucial for the designers to select the appropriate data acquisition technique, depending on the application requirements. Hence, this work provides the methodology and guidelines for the users to evaluate and compare different scanners for applications in the automotive, aerospace, and medical industries, etc. Abstract:The process of generating a computerized geometric model for an existing part is known as Reverse Engineering (RE). It is a very useful technique in product development and plays a significant role in automotive, aerospace, and medical industries. In fact, it has been getting remarkable attention in manufacturing industries owing to its advanced data acquisition technologies. The process of RE is based on two primary steps: data acquisition (also known as scanning) and data processing. To facilitate point data acquisition, a variety of scanning systems is available with different capabilities and limitations. Although the optical control of 3D scanners is fully developed, still several factors can affect the quality of the scanned data. As a result, the proper selection of scanning parameters, such as resolution, laser power, shutter time, etc., becomes very crucial. This kind of investigation can be very helpful and provide its users with guidelines to identify the appropriate factors. Moreover, it is worth noting that no single system is ideal in all applications. Accordingly, this work has compared two portable (handheld) systems based on laser scanning and white light optical scanning for automotive applications. A car door containing a free-form surface has been used to achieve the above-mentioned goal. The design of experiments has been employed to determine the effects of different scanning parameters and optimize them. The capabilities and limitations have been identified by comparing the two scanners in terms of accuracy, scanning time, triangle numbers, ease of use, and portability. Then, the relationships between the system capabilities and the application requirements have been established. The results revealed that the laser scanner performed better than the white light scanner in terms of accuracy, while the white light scanner performed better in terms of acquisition speed and triangle numbers.
