3D-FE analysis of functionally graded structured dental posts

Abstract: This study aimed to compare the biomechanical behaviour of functionally graded structured posts (FGSPs) and homogenous-type posts in simulated models of a maxillary central incisor. Two models of FGSPs consisting of a multilayer xTi-yHA composite design, where zirconia and alumina was added as the first layer for models A and B respectively were compared to homogenous zirconia post (model C) and a titanium post (model D). The amount of Ti and HA in the FGSP models was varied in gradations. 3D-FEA was performed… Show more

“…A constant value (68.9×10 -3 GPa) was considered for the elastic modulus of PDL according to published data. [7][8][9][10][11]13 This value is a significant simplification for the FEA. In fact, the values for the elastic modulus of PDL vary depending on loading, 26,27 meaning that at the beginning of loading, the elastic modulus values are low and increase as loading continues.…”

“…Perfect bonding was assumed at all interfaces of components without any gaps at the interfaces. 13 Mesh sensitivity analysis was performed to reveal the appropriate size for the elements. All models were meshed by about 110 000 ten-node tetrahedral elements (C3D10 in Abaqus) and 191 000 nodes.…”

“…Abu Kasim et al [174] investigated the stress distribution of a newly designed functionally graded dental post (FGDP) which consisted of multilayer design of ZrO 2 -Ti-HA and compared to posts fabricated from homogeneous material such as titanium and zirconia. They concluded that FGDP exhibited several advantages in terms of stress distribution compared to posts fabricated from homogeneous material.…”
