3D magneto-hydrodynamical simulations of stellar convective noise for improved exoplanet detection

Abstract: Context. Convective motions at the stellar surface generate a stochastic colored noise source in the radial velocity (RV) data. This noise impedes the detection of small exoplanets. Moreover, the unknown statistics (amplitude, distribution) related to this noise make it difficult to estimate the false alarm probability (FAP) for exoplanet detection tests. Aims. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of using 3D magneto-hydrodynamical simulations (MHD) of stellar convection to design detection methods th… Show more

“…More recently, the residuals on timescales lower than one day obtained by Collier Cameron et al (2019) on solar integrated RV times series and covering the whole spectrum obtained by HARPS-N are also of the order of 0.40 m s −1 (when averaging over typically 5 min). Similar amplitudes have been obtained by Sulis et al (2020) using MHD simulations. The difference between these estimates and the results of Meunier et al (2015) may be due to some subtle effects in the centre-to-limb dependence which are not taken into account in Meunier et al (2015), but also to the fact that observations were made in a single lines which may not be representative of the whole spectrum.…”

“…The radial-velocity wobble induced by a small exoplanet is much smaller than stellar microvariability, therefore effects of the latter must somehow be calibrated and corrected for. Numerous authors have studied empirical correlations between various stellar activity indices and corresponding excursions in apparent radial velocity (e.g., Cegla et al 2014Cegla et al , 2019Collier Cameron et al 2020;de Beurs et al 2020;Dumusque 2016;Feng et al 2016;Haywood et al 2016;Hojjatpanah et al 2020;Kosiarek & Crossfield 2020;Lanza et al 2019;Luhn et al 2020a;Marchwinski et al 2015;Meunier et al 2010Meunier et al , 2015Meunier et al , 2017bMiklos et al 2020;Oshagh et al 2017;Sulis et al 2020a;Tayar et al 2019;Thompson et al 2020).…”
