3d Model Visualization Enhancements in Real-Time Game Engines

Abstract: ABSTRACT:This paper describes two procedures used to disseminate tangible cultural heritage through real-time 3D simulations providing accurate-scientific representations. The main idea is to create simple geometries (with low-poly count) and apply two different texture maps to them: a normal map and a displacement map. There are two ways to achieve models that fit with normal or displacement maps: with the former (normal maps), the number of polygons in the reality-based model may be dramatically reduced by d… Show more

“…Each shell was then exported to the modeling program Zbrush for retopology. Retopology is the process of removing internal geometry and recreating the exterior geometry with a uniform distribution of faces at a user-specified resolution (Merlo et al 2013). Prior to retopology, models are automatically constructed at 1 to 1.5 million face resolutions.…”

“…Moreover, as there are many incompatibilities between 3D-GIS and BIM software, in the process of integration, the information model will lose some information due to the format exchange. To solve the integration problem, many relevant studies have also started to discuss the use of the game engine as the third-party platform, imported a large number of information models in BIM and 3D-GIS into the game engine, and presented the scenes of historical blocks in a real virtual environment [9,[28][29][30][31][32][33][34]. Therefore, the related research trend of integrated hybrid modeling technology also extends from the CAD, BIM, or GIS environment to the game environment, which is presented by the gamified interface and interactive platform ( Figure 1).…”

“…Referring to the VA project methodological approach, maintaining the accuracy of the spatial resolution and the precision of geometric relations is regarded as key for complying with scientific standards. Furthermore, maintaining the accuracy of raw data-sets and addressing compatibility of data formats are vital to conform with principles of reproducibility (Merlo et al 2012(Merlo et al , 2013. Data should be accessible for renewed use and re-evaluation, similar to the field practice of leaving parts in archaeological sites unexposed for future researchers to return to.…”
