3D Modeling of the Mexican Sign Language for a Speech-to-Sign Language System

Abstract: There are many people with communication impairments, deafness being one of the most common of them. Deaf people use Sign Language (SL) to communicate, and translation systems (Speech/Textto-SL) have been developed to assist such communication. However, since SLs are dependent of countries and cultures, there are differences between grammars, vocabularies, and signs, even if these come from places with similar spoken languages. In Mexico, work in this field is very limited, so any development must consider the… Show more

“…The same video recorder and distinctive feature software are used to create or edit sign gesture video data. Pre-recorded 3D-animations require special software (Maya, Blender, 3D-Max) that supports the keyframe editing of animation components (bone joints) [9,19,42,54,74,104]. Sometimes motion capturing hardware is required to generate animations [63].…”

“…Furthermore, take advantage of the technologies of virtual interfaces like Kinect (adapting the model of Speech to sign language of Caballero [21]) to create a serious game for the teaching/learning of SL and promote an inclusive social environment This can be used by people to learn basic signs, which may put in practice in front of a Kinect (as a way of validating if the sign that is being learned corresponds to the correct way to play it, analyzing regular correspondences between related languages [22]).…”
