3D Printing in Fashion Manufacturing: Applications, Challenges and Opportunities Toward Achieving Sustainable Development Goals

Abstract

Objective: This study discusses the current impact of 3D printing technology on the applications, challenges, and future opportunities in the fashion manufacturing business. It aims to understand how 3D printing reshapes manufacturing, customization, and supply chains, particularly in alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 9, 12, and 13. Theoretical Framework: The research is based on theories of innovation adoption, supply chain management, and sustainability. Key concepts like waste reduction, local production, and customization guide the investigation. Method: We have adopted a qualitative research approach, drawing from structured interviews with 14 industry professionals. These interviews have given us new insights into the creative functionalities of 3D printing in the fashion context, as well as challenges that retard its entry into the mainstream and new trends. Results and Discussion: 3D printing—a revolutionary technology—has significantly changed manufacturing processes, customization, and supply chain dynamics, aligning with SDG objectives by offering environmental benefits, such as waste reduction and localized production. The findings highlight current limitations of the technology and future opportunities for expansion. Research Implications: This study aims to provide important lessons that can be gleaned from the different stakeholders in the fashion and technology industries. It attempts to form a basis for further research into the practical application of 3D printing within fashion manufacturing. Originality/Value: This research contributes to understanding how 3D printing can transform fashion manufacturing. It highlights the potential of the technology to drive sustainable practices and shape future industry trends.
