3d printing of column structures for architectural applications

Abstract: Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) is a welding process used to build up three-dimensional structures in steel. Like other Additive Manufacturing technologies, it allows for geometrically-complex structures to be fabricated which are otherwise unfeasible to manufacture using traditional methods. This research paper presents an integrated design approach to the use of WAAM in the context of large-scaled applications, focusing on column variants of gradually-increasing geometric complexity as basis for archi… Show more

“…Depending on the workpiece, this process is supplemented every 20 -40 layers by a tactile measurement (TouchSense) of the current workpiece height to examine the layer height and make any necessary adjustments. This procedure has already proven successful in the manufacturing of more complex column geometries in shorter layer intervals [8]. In addition, the welding data is recorded for each layer and a layer image is created for each structure.…”

“…However, there is a significant overlap between papers covering topics represented in this and the other two clusters. For example, the impact of AM technologies on the design process can be observed in educational settings [44,45] and the construction industry [19,23,26,[51][52][53]. Another central theme is the design and fabrication of large-scale concrete structures.…”

“…For example, studies [12,25,26] focus on 3DP technology from a more technical standpoint, discussing printing equipment specifications and limitations. Another common research topic is the development of printing materials.…”
