3D versus 2D steering in patient anatomies: A comparison using hyperthermia treatment planning

Abstract: Hyperthermia treatment with the AMC-8 system can lead to a clinically relevant increase of the target temperature compared to treatment with the AMC-4 system. The AMC-8 system provides large freedom in the axial positioning of the patient.

“…Previous research has shown that the 3D steering of a double-ring 70-MHz waveguide system leads to improved tumour temperatures in comparison to a single-ring 2D 70-MHz waveguide system [13,35]. Numerical simulations also showed that it is possible to achieve a comparable improvement with smaller waveguide apertures of 8.5 Â 34.25 cm 2 instead of 20.5 Â 34.25 cm 2 [17].…”

“…Currently, planning studies are usually based on the separate hyperthermia and radiotherapy treatment plans (e.g. [34][35][36]), not taking into account the interaction between the two modalities. However, by taking the interaction between both treatments into account, the effect of parameters which change the interaction, such as the effect of time interval between the radiotherapy and hyperthermia treatments, can be studied.…”

“…This device uses the single ring four waveguide, 70 MHz 2D AMC-4 systems, or the double ring eight waveguide, 70 MHz 3D AMC-8 systems to deliver regional hyperthermia to tissue [3234]. While the 3D system has been shown to deliver hyperthermia to tissues better than the 2D version [34], their clinical effect is similar. …”
