3D video coding using redundant-wavelet multihypothesis and motion-compensated temporal filtering

Abstract: A video coder is presented that combines mesh-based motion-compensated temporal filtering, phase-diversity multihypothesis motion compensation, and an embedded 3D wavelet-coefficient coder. The key contribution of this work is the introduction of the phasediversity multihypothesis paradigm into motion-compensated temporal filtering, which is achieved by deploying temporal filtering in the domain of a spatially redundant wavelet transform. A regular triangle mesh is used to track motion between frames, and an a… Show more

“…Secondgeneration 3D wavelet/subband video coders attempt to couple wavelet and motion compensation (MC) in a more sophisticated fashion. Based on the order of performing spatial and temporal filtering, we classify second-generation coders into two categories: 3D motion-compensated subband coding [4,6,11] (temporal filtering followed by spatial transform) and overcomplete motion compensated wavelet coding (OMCWC) [13,14,20,28,31,37,38] (spatial transform followed by temporal filtering).…”

“…Our previous work successfully developed a coder that deployed the ME/MC by using the multiple predictions in RDWT domain. We name our system redundant wavelet multihypothesis (RWMH) [6,7]. That is an contribution to the multihypothesis motion compensation (MHMC) [8] by extending the different hypothesis into transform domain.…”
