4.36 Tbit/s Silicon Chip-to-Chip Transmission via Few-Mode Fiber (FMF) using 2D Sub-wavelength Grating Couplers

Abstract: We demonstrate a high-speed silicon chip-to-chip few-mode-fiber (FMF) transmission via 2D sub-wavelength grating-couplers. The design and characterization of the proposed silicon device are discussed. A total FMF transmission capacity of 4.36 Tbit/s is achieved.

“…Integrated diffraction grating produced on the SOI substrate, in addition to fiber-based photonic lanterns and laser inscribed 3D optical WGs, is a possible contender. Low cost, great reliability, massproduction, and co-integration with other integrated photonic devices such as high-bandwidth transceivers are all apparent advantages of monolithic integration 110,111 .…”

“…In recent years, there have also been some solutions to achieve multimode coupling, primarily categorized into vertical coupling schemes and horizontal coupling schemes. [46][47][48] The 2D sub-wavelength grating coupler, a common vertical scheme, can be used to enable an FMF-chip data transmission with high loss and a limited number of modes. [46] For the horizontal coupling scheme, a multi-mode converter based on an inverse taper is proposed to efficiently convert FMF modes and multimode waveguide modes in a narrow bandwidth.…”

“…Mode division multiplexing (MDM) [ 19 ] is a popular way to achieve SDM, which allows signals to be propagated in different orthogonal modes in a single waveguide core. MDM systems using few-mode optical fiber (FMF) were also reported [ 23 , 24 ]. Different fiber-based or free-space optics-based MDM multiplexer/demultiplexers (Mux/Demux) were demonstrated, including those utilizing directional mode selective couplers [ 25 ], long period fiber grating (LPFG) [ 26 ], free-space optics [ 27 ], and photonic lanterns (PLs) [ 28 ].…”
