The range of mirative meanings across the world's languages subsumes sudden discovery, surprise, and unprepared mind of the speaker (and also the audience or the main character of a story). Mirative markers may also convey overtones of counterexpectation and new information. The range of mirative meanings may be expressed through a verbal affix, a complex predicate, or a pronoun. Evidentials whose major function is to express information source may have mirative extensions, especially in the context of the 1st person subject. The mirative category appears to be susceptible to linguistic diffusion.

La partícula ra'e en guaraní mbyá. Evidencialidad y temporalidad 1 ABSTRACT: The languages of the guarani branch (tupi-guarani family) are characterized by marking tense, aspect and modality mostly through free particles. This paper focuses on particle ra'e, which was initially categorized as a past relative marker, but has been lately considered a modal marker, namely, an evidential with mirative extensions. Working on data in Mbyá Guarani language, and without exhausting the meaning possibilities of this particle, the author tests the notion of Deferred Realization Evidential as a definition of this particle. In a formal semantics framework, it is noted that the use of this particle introduces a presupposition of indirect evidentiality. Finally, among the aspects related to mirativity, it is noted that the use of ra'e entails that the information is new for the speaker. Keywords: Tupi-guarani family; Mbyá guarani; Evidentiality; Mirativity.RESUMEN: Las lenguas de la rama guaraní (familia tupí-guaraní) se caracterizan por marcar tiempo, aspecto y modalidad mayormente mediante partículas libres. El presente trabajo hace foco en la partícula ra'e, primeramente considerada un marcador de tiempo pretérito relativo, pero más recientemente analizada como modal, en particular un evidencial con extensiones mirativas. A partir de datos de campo de la lengua mbyá guaraní, y sin pretender agotar las posibilidades de significado que posee esta partícula, se profundiza en el concepto de Evidencial de Percepción Diferida. En el marco de la semántica formal, se advierte que su uso introduce una presuposición de evidencialidad indirecta en los enunciados. Por último, entre los aspectos vinculados con la miratividad, se identifica que el uso de ra'e entraña el hecho de que la información codificada es nueva para el hablante. This essay attempts to account for a shift, over the past century, in the narrative particle used in San Carlos Apache storytelling. Early text collections feature a verb of speaking. More recent storytellers tend to use a particle glossed variously as a received wisdom particle, a remote past particle, or, most productively, a deferred realization particle. Drawing on Zygmunt Bauman, I argue that the collective administrative agendas of government, education, military, and religious personnel on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, orbiting around the conjoined metapragmatics of modernity, Christianity, and literacy, help to explain the social life of these narrative particles. I focus particularly on the role of Lutheran missionaries in San Carlos in supporting the idea of an increased reliability accruing to the deferred realization of writing and reading.
