42‐4: 360‐Degree Tabletop Type 3D Screen System Using Linear Blending of Viewing Zones and Spatially Imaged Iris Plane

Abstract: We propose a 3D screen system that provides 360‐degree smooth motion parallax. We implemented a prototype using 60 projectors, which is one fifth the number for the conventional method, and the display area has a diameter of 1,200 mm. We show the optical configuration and the visual mechanism of depth perception.

“…In this method, many projectors at very close intervals are required to switch smoothly between video sources as the viewpoint moves. In our own previous study, we focused on the perceptual mechanism of a visual system, called "linear blending" [1,2,4,5].…”

“…In this way, the projector iris plane (the part equivalent to the iris in the projector optical system) forms in the space and the observer perceives only the projected image within that range. We previously developed a wall-mounted 3D screen system [5] and a 360-degree tabletop 3D screen system [1,2] using the principle of linear blending and the spatially imaged iris plane screen. These systems have shown that 3D images with smooth motion parallax can be presented by means of a practical configuration with a reduced number of projectors.…”
