“…The contribution of western and northern forest ecosystems to the conservation of endemic and threatened Malagasy taxa has been previously demonstrated for several species of reptiles (Raxworthy and Nussbaum 1995, Andreone et al 2000, amphibians (Andreone et al 2000), small mammals (Soarimalala and Goodman 2003) and birds (Seddon and Tobias 2007 deforestation, but might also help to overcome the frequent bias in protected area designation in Madagascar, which tends to ignore aquatic diversity . However, as protected area creation is a mid-or long -term process (taking at least 3 -4 years to obtain definitive protection status), the monitoring of key environmental resources should start early to ensure long -term viability of these proposed sites.…”

“…The few available studies on the response of amphibian communities to land-use change in Madagascar reported lower overall values, with 32 and 28 species, respectively(Vallan 2000;Ndriantsoa et al 2017). Andreone et al (2000) found 42 amphibian and 23 reptile species between the Anjanaharibe-Sud and Marojejy massifs in a north-eastern Malagasy rainforest. Despite differences in methodology and study sites, our study provided additional evidence that the north-eastern of Madagascar is one of the most species-rich regions for herpetofauna, as previously suggested(Brown et al 2016).…”

“…On the plot level, we found up to 12 amphibian and 13 reptile species within a 25 m radius, summing up to 119 species overall (58 amphibian and 51 reptile species). Other studies investigating the response of amphibian communities to land-use change in Madagascar (Ndriantsoa et al, 2017;Vallan, 2000) found lower overall values, with 62 and 28 species, respectively; and Andreone et al (2000) found 42 amphibian and 23 reptile species in a rainforest in north-eastern Madagascar. The only study coming close to the diversity documented here is also from northeastern Madagascar, obtaining records for 80 amphibian 52 reptile species (Rabearivony et al, 2015) in a forest corridor.…”
