43Gb/s Adaptive Polarization Mode Dispersion Compensator Field Trial

Abstract: We describe long-term field measurements at 43Gb/s over a high-PMD link, using one receiver with adaptive PMD compensation and a second receiver without. The Q at both receivers is monitored and correlated with instantaneous DGD.

“…Therefore a WSS will reduce the transmission performance only slightly. Furthermore the ODB offers a wide chromatic dispersion range of about 300ps/nm in a back-to-back configuration [9]. The launch power for the 40G ODB signal is compatible with existing 10Gb/s design rules.…”

“…ODB offers limited reach (below 1,000km for SSMF, 850km for mixed TWC/SSMF routes [8]) and is targeted for regional / LH applications. The PMD tolerance is about 3.5ps PMD (mean DGD), implying that on links with high PMD a polarization mode dispersion compensator will likely be necessary even for relatively short links [9], e.g., on links longer than 300km for a fiber with a high PMD coefficient of 0.2ps/km 1/2 . Mixing of 10Gb/s NRZ OOK channels and 40Gb/s ODB channels is possible.…”

“…DQPSK is more tolerant to PMD than DPSK due to the the longer bit period of the multilevel format [1]. Similarly to CD compensator, optical PMD compensators are commercially available for 40G systems [13]. DPSK was shown to be tolerant to about 8 ps of differential group delay (DGD) and with the addition of of a PMD compensator, the tolerance increases to greater than 20ps and mean PMD of <8 ps> while the bit period is 23.3 ps.…”

“…In previous literatures, the real-time, endless control of compensation for PMD was realized either in back-to-back case (just using PMD emulator) [4,5] or in the real fiber link, as long as 75 km [6], 192 km [7], 254 km [8], 320 km [9], and 760 km [10].…”
