48.1: Invited Paper: Recent Advances in Standardization of Display Metrology and Light Measurement

Abstract: This paper provides an introduction to recent activities and achievements of three standardization organizations, CIE (Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage), IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) and ISO (International Organization for Standardization), insofar as they are relevant to display metrology and, more generally, to measurement of light. The status quo is summarized in this contribution and plans and schedules are presented.

“…The work reported in this paper is part of an ongoing effort to create metrology standards for reflective displays [11], [12], with the specific objective of extending ISO 9241 to reflective EPD and their wider range of viewing environments [8]. To achieve this, differences in measurement methods must be reconciled and gaps identified.…”

“…However, part of these standards speaks to the effects of lighting on transmissive or tablet like screens as used in the workplace and not on the more leisurely reading done with eReaders with their reflective screens. As Becker stated, the International Standard Organization is revising the standards with respect to the conditions of ambient illumination for testing reflective and transparent display screens …”

“…As Becker stated, the International Standard Organization is revising the standards with respect to the conditions of ambient illumination for testing reflective and transparent display screens. 19 Therefore, this study endeavored to contribute to the existing knowledge base by comparing reader performance of an LCD (new iPad), and electronic paper display (Kindle DX), and an electronic paper display with an integrated light unit (Amazon Kindle Paperwhite) under 14 levels of ambient lighting. In addition, these devices were in turn compared with conventional plain paper text.…”
