Abstract: Sustainable management of natural water resources should include environmentally sound dam construction and operation with respect to both upstream and downstream management. Because of slowly evolving alterations in riverine ecosystems following the construction of a dam -due to the sometimes large distances between dams and affected areas, and the interference with other anthropogenic activities -some of the effects of damming may be overlooked. Constructing reservoirs modifies the biogeochemical cycles, suc… Show more

“…Impounding water upstream of dams is known to change the nutrient balance of a river system, as reservoir sediments can act as efficient sink for P (Friedl and Wüest 2002). Globally, the mass of TP trapped in reservoirs nearly doubled (42 Gmol·year −1 ) between 1970 and 2000 and about 17% of the total TP load of rivers is expected to be retained in sediments of reservoirs by 2030 (Maavara et al 2015).…”

“…Additionally, some studies have focussed on the trapping efficiency of reservoirs and the effects on hydrograph, sediment and nutrient transport as well as the overall ecological conditions of the dammed watersheds (Friedl and Wüest, 2002;Gubiani et al, 2010).…”

“…Dams reduce the water transport and consequently decrease the turbidity providing favourable conditions for enhancing particles settling and in situ primary production. More phytoplankton might reduce particulate and dissolved nutrient loads across the flooded river stretch by processes such as nutrient uptake followed by sedimentation and adsorption on suspended matter (Friedl and Wüest 2002); Harrison et al, 2009). …”

“…Among the multiple environmental, ecological, biogeochemical and social impacts associated with reservoir development [Rosenberg et al, 1995[Rosenberg et al, , 1997Vörösmarty et al, 1997;Friedl and Wüest, 2002], the emission of carbon (C) gases is steadily becoming a focus of both scientific and economic concerns. Hydroelectric production was until quite recently, considered for all practical purposes as relatively C-neutral with close to zero-emission [Hoffert et al, 1998;Victor, 1998], but there is mounting evidence that hydroelectric reservoirs may in fact emit significant amounts of both carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and methane (CH 4 ).…”
