4d strings at strong coupling

Fernando Marchesano,
Max Wiesner

Abstract: Weakly coupled regions of 4d EFTs coupled to gravity are particularly suitable to describe the backreaction of BPS fundamental axionic strings, dubbed EFT strings, in a local patch of spacetime around their core. We study the extension of these local solutions to global ones, which implies probing regions of strong coupling and provides an estimate of the EFT string tension therein. We conjecture that for the EFT string charge generators such a global extension is always possible and yields a sub-Planckian ten… Show more

“…• Generalization to black strings and other extended objects, in general dimensions, and their possible explosions upon the introduction of scalar potentials. A particular instance of this is the fate of the 4d EFT strings in [23][24][25] in the presence of potentials growing fast at the string core.…”

“…In particular, the end of the world branes in dynamical cobordisms [7][8][9][10][11] (see also [12] for the swampland cobordism conjecture, [13][14][15][16] for early work and [17][18][19][20][21][22] for other related recent developments), display interesting scaling relations among the spacetime curvature and the spacetime and field theory distances. Other setups are 4d EFT strings [23][24][25], and small black holes (see e.g. [26] for a review, and [27] for discussion in the swampland context).…”

“…Such a step can be motivated by the completeness hypothesis [96]. This approach has been recently pursued in [97][98][99][100][101] (see [102] for a similar work in five dimensions), based on the manifest supersymmetric formalism developed in [103,104], but the history of supergravity coupled to extended objects dates back to [105,106].…”
