“…An alternative configuration II , also shown in Chart , is derived by the removal of a vertex of low connectivity from nido -B 10 H 14 (structure III in Chart ). This geometry, discovered after the species of n geometry and therefore given an iso or i descriptor, is in fact much more prevalent, being exhibited by the parent cluster i -B 9 H 15 2 and by the [B 9 H 14 ] - anion and by a series of neutral ligand derivatives [B 9 H 13 L], in addition to being ubiquitous as the fundamental structural motif for whole families of heteroborane derivatives based on [CB 8 H 14 ], , [NB 8 H 13 ],8a [SB 8 H 12 ], ,8c, [C 2 B 7 H 13 ], [S 2 B 7 H 9 ], 8b, etc., as well as metallaborane families represented by [(CO) (PMe 3 ) 2 HIrB 8 H 12 ] and [(PMe 2 Ph) 2 PtB 8 H 12 ] and isolated metallaheteroboranes such as [(PPh 3 ) 2 PtCB 7 H 11 ]14a and [(PMe 2 Ph) 2 PtS 2 B 6 H 8 ] 14b. However, despite the ubiquity of this structural motif II , there are inconsistencies, both within the literature and between literature reports and our own experimental findings, concerning the fundamental hydrogen-atom configurations in its basic nine-boron templates [B 9 H 14 ] - and [B 9 H 13 L].…”
