Abstract:This chapter explores the genesis of Herman Melville’s unfinished final prose work, the novella Billy Budd. To do so, it relies upon Hayford and Sealts’s Genetic Text Edition, and upon the Fluid Text Edition available on the Melville Electronic Library.
