5G-Enabled Tactile Internet

Abstract: Abstract-The long-term ambition of the Tactile Internet is to enable a democratization of skill, and how it is being delivered globally. An integral part of this is to be able to transmit touch in perceived real-time, which is enabled by suitable robotics and haptics equipment at the edges, along with an unprecedented communications network. The fifth generation (5G) mobile communications systems will underpin this emerging Internet at the wireless edge. This paper presents the most important technology concep… Show more

“…As a further step, the disruptive technologies enabling the deployment of 5G systems aiming at introducing flexibility, customization and re-configurability of the network in both radio and core segments, will enable the provisioning of enhanced IoT services interconnecting people and everything. Indeed, a natural evolution of connecting devices to the Internet, is to remotely control these devices through the Internet; machines are not only able to talk to each other, but 5G is also focusing on enabling novel industry-related IoT applications in both consumer and business environments, for instance to increase industry automation, remote control and tactile Internet applications (Simsek et al, 2016). This Chapter will cover the main trends in the industry to use the IoT to tackle several problems or to improve outcomes: business-to-business (B2B) market, increase in automation and remote control/operation, cost reduction, efficiency improvement.…”

“…Other scenarios featuring existing backhaul links may favor local processing over centralized one in order to meet the tight latency constraints derived from 5G and tactile internet applications [4]. In these cases, a full CSI sharing across TXs is not always desired, and there is a need for robust processing on the basis of locally available CSI.…”
