5G evolution: 3GPP Releases 16 & 17 Overview

Abstract: According to the latest Ericsson MobilityReport, global traffic levels hit 38 exabytes per month at the end of 2019, with a projected fourfold increase to 160 exabytes per month expected by 2025 [1]. Fortunately, the 5G system is designed to handle this massive increase in data traffic in a way that ensures superior performance with minimal impact on the net costs for consumers.

“…Release 16 focuses on very low latency and improved reliability by increasing the monitoring frequency of the control channel. Tese features are crucial for use cases that require communication between multiple services, such as factory automation, power distribution, and the transportation industry [18,19]. Meanwhile, Release 17 is designed to support use cases with high mobile data trafc and NR customization demanded by, e.g., automotive, logistics, and media [18].…”

“…The evolution that has taken place in recent years in communications systems has given new impetus to the rethinking of such systems both in the public sector as well as through the experimentation of new business models. Indeed, the support of public safety applications is among the objectives of 3GPP Rel.17 [17]. The reasons for the failure in the evolution of traditional public safety networks are mainly due to the need for the use of dedicated infrastructures characterized by high costs, which prevented the densification and the enhancement of such systems.…”

“…In June 2018, the 15th edition of the 3GPP standard for 5G New Radio (NR) standalone mode was completed [22]. Further evolution of the 5G standard described in 3GPP Release 16 [23], this specification contains several significant extensions and enhancements, and further improvements were made in Release 17 [24,25] and Release 18 [26]. 5G holds the promise of multi-functional support through different heterogeneous services, addressing parameters such as data rate, latency, and the number of connected devices.…”
