670 nm photobiomodulation improves the mitochondrial redox state of diabetic wounds

Abstract: Background: Photobiomodulation (PBM) by far-red (FR) to near-infrared (NIR) light has been demonstrated to accelerate diabetic wound healing in preclinical and clinical studies. Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress play key roles in impaired diabetic wound healing, and the effect of PBM on the metabolic state of diabetic wounds remains to be elucidated. Methods: In this study, a custom-designed in vivo fluorescence imaging technique was used to quantitatively assess the effect of FR-PBM on the mitocho… Show more

“…(c) In this study, vascular images of the kidney, lung, heart, and liver were segmented using VMI. This VMI approach could be extended to other organs and pathologies, such as eye, skin wounds, and tumor as we 48,50,55 and others 56 have investigated their mitochondrial RR in the previous reports. (d) Since the technique uses optical imaging technologies, it is capable of high-resolution imaging compared to x-ray or ultrasound instruments.…”

“…Furthermore, PBM (904 nm, 6.23 J/cm 2 ) improved mitochondrial dynamics via modulating the expression of mitofusin 2 and dynamin-related protein 1 in type 1 diabetic rats [ 89 ], partially preventing or reversing mitochondrial dynamics dysfunction. PBM also preserved mitochondrial function and integrity in rats with neonatal hypoxic-ischemia injury, leading to significant alleviation or prevention of hypoxic-ischemia-induced brain injury [ 90 ].…”

“…NADH and FAD are autofluorescent and are measured without any exogenous labels by optical imaging techniques [22] . NADH/FAD’s ratio, also known as the redox ratio (RR), is associated with mitochondrial metabolic state and functionality [23] , [24] . Any significant imbalance in the NADH and FAD concentrations would lead to cellular dysfunction and diseases [21] .…”
