75‐1: Student Paper: Brightness and Vividness of High Dynamic Range Displayed Imagery

Abstract: Metrics that predict the perceptual brightness of displayed imagery are vitally important, especially as wide color gamut, high dynamic range displays become more widespread. We implemented a color appearance modeling pipeline derived from the iCAM image color appearance framework and CAM76 color appearance model that allows for the accurate prediction of color appearance attributes, such as brightness, colorfulness, and vividness, of high dynamic range displayed imagery. Building on previous work on the Perce… Show more

“…Berns's vividness dimension also better aligns with the change in color that real‐world objects experience, for instance, as one increases the concentration of colorant in a dye or increases the brightness on a display. Recent research confirms that the brightness of high dynamic range (HDR) displayed imagery perceived by observers is better predicted by a vividness metric than a traditional achromatic measure of display brightness 9 …”

“…This property is known as the Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effect and has been discussed previously for quantum dots. A revised color appearance model taking this effect into account was recently proposed by Hellwig et al [2]. This model uses vividness as a metric combining both colorfulness and brightness.…”
