We present a systematic way to construct theories for d = 2 conformal supergravity with N = 0, 1, 2 or 4 as gauge theories corresponding to infinite dimensional algebras. Coupling these theories to scalar matter multiplets leads to o-models in a background of conformal supergravity which provide covariant actions for various string models. The construction of N = 4 models with quaternionic geometry requires an extension of the N = 4 supergravity multiplet containing an additional sp(1) vector multiplet. We demonstrate the role played by this vector multiplet in a construction of the N = 4 quaternionic o-model with target space HP(n -1).
