8-Hydroxydeoxyguanosine as a Useful Marker for Determining the Severity of Trichloroethylene Exposure

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG) levels in trichloroethylene (TCE)-exposed workers. Oxidative stress biomarkers and biochemical parameters were monitored among 26 TCE-exposed workers and 78 age-matched control subjects. Levels of urinary 8-OH-dG were analyzed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Urinary 8-OH-dG levels were significantly higher for TCE-exposed group (p < .001). Spearman's correlation test revealed positive correlations between urinary trichl… Show more

“…Some diseases, such as cardiovascular or chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), have been associated with excessive concentrations of 8-OHdG [7,8]. 8-OHdG levels also increase due to smoking, aging, or occupational exposure to physical, chemical, or biological substances [9,10].…”

“…From that, the UA-independent TAC could be the better approach to evaluate red-ox status of body both after nutritional interventions and in diseases associated with hyperuricaemia. Finally, TAC is sensitive also to the endogenous antioxidant response induced by some pathological and environmental conditions [ 20 , 33 , 48 , 57 , 59 , 67 , 115 , 126 , 132 , 139 , 142 ].…”

“…Decreased levels of salivary TAC were found also in workers subjected to occupational exposure to nonferrous metal mine conditions [ 51 ], whereas exposure to trichloroethylene increased urinary TAC [ 139 ].…”

“…Some respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, have been correlated to a high level of 8-OHdG (3). 8-OHdG levels are also high in some stressful situations including smoking, aging, lack of or extreme exercise and occupational exposure to chemicals (4, 5). Individual 8-OHdG levels are usually measured in leukocytic DNA or in the urine.…”
