824 - The use of lasers in restorative dentistry: truths and myths

Abstract: Researchers have been investigating the clinical applications of lasers in dentistry, which can be operated in high and low intensity. The high intensity lasers work with increasing temperature for ablation, vaporization, cutting and coagulating of the tissue while the low level lasers therapy are used in the photophysical, photobiological and photochemical effects on the cells of the irradiated tissues. This review approaches the use of lasers of high and low intensity focused in restorative dentistry. The in… Show more

“…22,23 The Nd:YAG laser, in turn, is capable of increasing the temperature such that the dentin melts and obliterates the dentinal tubules. 24,25 In most cases, the laser system applied before the adhesive resulted in reduced bond strength. The reduced bond strength was attributed to denaturation of the organic components as a result of the heat generated by the laser.…”

“…The use of laser for caries prevention is based on the reduction of microorganisms [29], due to its chemical action on dental plaque, and morphological modification of the enamel structure [1,30,31], making it more resistant to the acids of the demineralizing solution. Among the lasers indicated for caries prevention, Nd:YAG laser has been one of the most studied types [3].…”

“…Although the prevalence of dental caries has diminished over the last few decades, it is still the most prevalent disease in childhood and adolescence [1][2][3]. Areas with pits and fissures in premolars and molars are highly susceptible to the development of caries lesions due to their morphology, and form an ideal site for the accumulation of bacteria and food [4][5][6][7].…”
