“…At this location activity concentrations of 36 Bq kg −1 d.w. in female reindeer muscle and several hundred Bq kg −1 d.w. in liver were determined [7]. The dry mass to fresh mass ratio was on average 0.3.…”

“…For mountainous areas dominated by Alpine vegetation, lichen appears to play a key role in the introduction of 210 Pb into the foodchain. Lichens are slow growing perennials that have high interception potentials for aerosols in precipitation, and therefore contain significantly higher 210 Pb concentrations than vascular plants [7]. Animals feeding on lichens, notably reindeer, have been shown to have relatively high muscle and organ 210 Po and 210 Pb activity concentrations [7].…”

“…The mean annual intakes of 210 Po and 210 Pb in the adult diet are about 58 Bq and 30 Bq, causing effective doses of 0.070 and 0.021 mSv y -1 , respectively (UN-SCEAR 2000). High concentrations of 210 Po have been reported in fish and seafood (Parfenov 1974;UNSCEAR 2000) and in the meat of caribou and reindeer (Holtzman 1966;Kauranen and Miettinen 1969;Persson and Holm 2011;Thomas 1994;Thomas et al 2001;Skuterud et al 2005;Solatie et al 2005).…”

“…For this reason, studies have focused particularly on 210 Po and 210 Pb activity in soil, moss and lichen samples collected around CFPPs [6][7][8][9][10]12]. According to these studies, activity concentrations of 210 Po and 210 Pb were reported to be much higher in the vicinity of CFPPs when compared to control areas due to the emission of flue gases and fly ash from burning coal.…”
