Abstract

This study comprehends the signification processes of the words estupro and estuprar in Portuguese-language dictionaries, analyzing them as a symbolic object, based on studies of Discourse Analysis 1 v. 17 • n. • p. 10-26 • jan./jun. 2021 11 (ORLANDI, 2013). The selected entries complement a historical and social constitution that materializes violence against women in / through language. Thus, formulations such as "cópula com virgem" or "crime" to define "estupro" present the relationship between stabilization and the displacement of meanings, materialized in the dictionaries, as the dictionary definitions expose, for what they silence, a historically prebuilt installed on violence against women, and the condition of women, marked in the language.
