Abstract: Most concepts of sexual desire implicitly refer to early phases of attraction and youthful living systems. For an alternative conceptual approach of decreasing sexual desire in long-term relationships, three points are addressed which influence the definition and theorizing on decreasing sexual interest: (1) passive vs. active negation of desire; (2) desire as part of sexual function vs. desire as passion in its own right; and (3) desire as individual trait vs. emergent function of structural coupling of the p… Show more

“…While partners may experience an increase in their levels of intimacy and commitment in a satisfying relationship, they often show a decrease in their level of passion (e.g., Garcia, 1998). Although some people report that their passion remains constant over time (Frederick et al, 2017), the majority of people experience a decline (e.g., Beck, 1995; Brewis & Meyer, 2005; Clement, 2002; Levine, 2003).…”

“…Although the role of sexual desire may vary over the course of a relationship (Birnbaum & Reis, 2006, 2012; Bredow et al, 2008), sexuality is important in most romantic relationships and differentiates the romantic relationship from other close relationships (Butzer & Campbell, 2008; Laumann et al, 2006; Muise et al, 2016; Sprecher, 2002). At the beginning of the relationship, sexual desire is high but shows substantial decline over the course of the relationship (e.g., Beck, 1995; Brewis & Meyer, 2005; Clement, 2002; Levine, 2003). Weaker sexual desire, in turn, is associated with lower sexual frequency and lower satisfaction (e.g., Call et al, 1995; Schmiedeberg et al, 2017; Sprecher, 2002).…”

“…Since Masters and Johnson's behavioural approach, numerous integrations and adaptations have been developed including cognitive therapy approaches (e.g. Ford, 2005;Hawton, 1985;Payne et al, 2005), systems and couples' approaches (Clement, 2002;Gehring, 2003) and critical and third wave approaches (Atwood & Dershowitz, 1992;Barker, 2011). More recently, mindfulness approaches have been promoted and researched Stephenson, 2017;Stephenson & Kerth, 2017).…”
