Abstract: Accuracy in runoff and flood estimation is important for mitigating water related problems. The accuracy depends on the methods used for areal rainfall approximation. The thin plate spline (TPS) technique was introduced in this study for daily areal rainfall approximation in the Upper Ping river basin and was compared with the areal rainfall estimated from two conventional techniques, the isohyetal and Thiessen polygon techniques. Two data sets of maximum rainfall registered in August 2001 and September 2003 a… Show more

“…Starting from the simplest IDW to complex geostatistical methods such as Krieging, there are various techniques for rainfall interpolation which are in used and compared in many studies (Hartkamp et al, 1999;Naoum and Tsanis, 2004;Taesombat and Sriwongsitanon, 2009;Mair and Fares, 2011;Noori et al, 2014). The efficiency off these methods depends on many factors which has the origin mainly in the number and spatial distribution of measurement sites (Di Piazza et al, 2011;Chen et al, 2017;).…”

“…This crucial method helps solve the issue of the sparse and low hydroclimatic network density and is widely used by governments and other sectors for planning water resource use and management at various spatiotemporal scales. Spatial interpolation techniques require either ground-based observed climatic input data, radar rainfall, remote sensing-based satellite climatic input data, or blended data (Taesombat, Sriwongsitanon 2009;Verdin et al 2015;Cantet 2017;Gebremedhin et al 2021). The output of spatial interpolation is a map that shows the scale of the spatial climatic variable pattern of an area.…”

“…Considering the tempo-spatial changes of precipitation on the one hand, and an often relatively low density of rain gauge stations on the other hand, it is common to estimate, rather than measure, the precipitation distribution over a larger area. The obtained isohyetal map describing this distribution is the basis of land-use planning, environmental studies, disaster management, hydrological analysis, and water resources management [2][3][4]. However, the accuracy of the production of these maps depends on the methods used for the interpolation of the observed precipitation for the total considered area.…”
