Abstract: Rendered animal protein ingredients, such as feather meal and blood meal, are promising animal protein sources for the replacement of fish meal often proved to combine synergistically. Three practical diets containing similar amounts of PD/ED (22.0 mg/kJ) but differing in the amount of digestible protein were tested in sea bream juveniles of initial body weight 41.81±1.12 g. FBCM diet (40%PD) and FBM diet (42%PD) contained similar percentages of blood and feather meal (10% and 5%, respectively) but differed in… Show more

“…To date, besides protein-rich plant derivatives, other protein sources such as processed animal proteins (PAPs) and, recently, insect meals have been tested in diets for gilthead seabream [48,[70][71][72]. Among PAPs, poultry by-product meal has been studied in previous experiments on juvenile sea bream, where it was found not to be detrimental in terms of growth performance and feed efficiency when included at amounts of up to 25% in diets largely based on fish meal [73].…”

“…Recently, PBM [47][48][49][50][51] and insect meal [52,53] were tested as alternative ingredients for seabream diet formulation with promising results in terms of zootechnical parameters, fish health, and fillet quality, while scarce information is so far available about the effects of these ingredients on the fish intestine and liver response. In addition, in the previous experiments, PBM and insect meal were tested as an FM substitute, while the effect of their inclusion on a vegetable-based diet, singly or in combination, is still unknown in gilthead seabream.…”

“…These preliminary findings underlined that the relationship between chemical and physicochemical changes of proteins and digestibility is more or less straightforward; hence, the biochemical and biological effects, especially the bioavailability, must be taken into account upon evaluating protein replacement. In previous studies on replacement of fishmeal with feathermeal, there has, to the best of our knowledge, been no focus on the relationship between feed protein chemical changes and fish biological performance.…”
