Abstract

Background: Smoking is a health problem in Indonesia with a high level of use. Data from Riskesdas (2018) in Padang City shows the prevalence of adolescent smokers at the age of less than 20 years (66.2%). The effects of smoking can be dangerous to death because cigarettes have 4000 addictive substances such as carbon monoxide and nicotine that are additive and carciogenetic. The content of this cigarette can cause damage and various kinds of diseases in the mouth (infection of the gums), diseases in the bronchi, diseases in the lungs (lung cancer) and diseases of reproductive health. The purpose of this study is to describe the determinants of smoking behavior in SMP Negeri 40 Padang students in 2022. Methodology: Quantitative descriptive research with a cross sectional approach. The study was conducted from January to July 2022 with a total sample of 102 people. The variables of this study are smoking behavior, level of knowledge, attitude, reasons for psychology, parental influence, peer influence, and cigarette advertising influence. The research instrument uses a questionnaire that has been tested for validity and reliability. Data processing by univariate, bivariate and multivariate analysis. Discussion: Results of analysis with prevalence of smoking behavior in students (56.9%), high level of knowledge (55.9%), positive attitude (61.8%), negative psychological reasons (46.1%), influence of supportive parents (84.3%), Influence of supportive Peers (52.9%), Influence of supportive Cigarette Ads (56.9%). Parental influence variables (p-value = 0.011 POR= 5.062), knowledge (p-value = 0.048 POR = 2.460) and attitude (p-value = 0.029 POR = 2.800) had an association with smoking behavior. Conclusion: Parental Influence Variable is the most dominant variable. Conduct socialization about the dangers of cigarettes periodically once a month.
