Abstract: This paper describes methods being used to implement and assess the effects of a trauma-focused intervention in residential treatment programs for youths with emotional and behavioral problems, and histories of maltreatment and exposure to family or community violence. Preliminary baseline profiles of the therapeutic environments and youths are also presented. The intervention, referred to as the Sanctuary Model (Bloom, 1997), is based in social psychiatry, trauma theories, therapeutic community philosophy, an… Show more

“…It is therefore unlikely that the treatment needs of youth with histories of significant trauma exposure are being systematically addressed in residential care, particularly those with complex trauma histories. These gaps have led researchers and practitioners alike to advocate for the implementation and evaluation of trauma-informed interventions within residential treatment settings (e.g., Rivard et al, 2003).…”

“…Trauma-informed interventions in residential settings have tended to focus either on treating emotion and behavior dysregulation (see, for example, Habib et al 2013), or on teaching staff theoretical principles of the impact of trauma in order to create a trauma-informed milieu (Rivard et al 2003). A recent exception is the Attachment, Regulation and Competency (ARC) model, which adopts a systems-level approach to addressing the regulatory capacities of complexly traumatized youth in residential treatment settings (Hodgdon et al 2013).…”

“…A small scale pilot study (n = 24) of the Structured Psychotherapy for Adolescents Responding to Chronic Stress (SPARCS: Habib, Labruna, & Newman, 2013) found young people made gains in anxiety, depression, physical complaints and prosocial behaviour and implementation of the Trauma and Grief Component Therapy for Adolescents (n = 77) and whole staff training using Think Trauma led to significant reductions in PTSD, depression and anger (Olafson et al, ). The Sanctuary model that focuses on developing trauma-sensitive milieu has also been found to increase institutional capacity to help young people focus on safety, manage emotion, and deal with loss (Rivard, Bloom, Mccorkle, & Abramovitz, 2005;Rivard et al, 2003). Ford and Bleustein (2013) conclude that compared to behaviour oriented approaches trauma-specific programmes appear to lead to better behaviour and mental health outcomes for young people in secure accommodation.…”
