Continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastics (cFRTP) are one of the most promising lightweight materials. For their use in structural components, reproducible and comparable material values have to be evaluated, especially at high strain rates. Due to their high stiffness and outstanding strength properties, the evaluation of the material behavior at high strain rates is complex. In the presented work, a new tensile specimen geometry for strain rate testing is virtually optimized using a metamodel approach with an artificial neural network. The final specimen design is experimentally validated and compared with rectangular specimen results for a carbon fiber reinforced polycarbonate (CF-PC). The optimized specimen geometry leads to 100% valid test results in experimental validation of cross-ply laminates and reaches 9% higher tensile strength values than the rectangle geometry with applied end tabs at a strain rate of 40 s−1. Through the optimization, comparable material parameters can be efficiently generated for a successful cFRTP strain rate characterization.

Fracture investigation of U-notched E-glass/epoxy laminated composite specimens with various notch root radii is performed under mixed mode I/II loading conditions both experimentally and theoretically. Rectangular E-glass/epoxy composite laminates with two numbers of ply (8-ply and 16-ply) and the quasi-isotropic [0/90/+45/–45]s lay-up configuration are fabricated for conducting the fracture tests. To measure the damage initiation angles (DIAs) and the last-ply-failure (LPF) loads of the fabricated composite samples containing horizontal and inclined U-notches, as the main aim of this study, the specimens are loaded under tension by the universal testing machine. The experimental LPF loads are theoretically predicted with the aid of a novel concept, called the Virtual Isotropic Material Concept (VIMC). The proposed VIMC is linked to the two well-known stress-based fracture criteria, namely the maximum tangential stress (MTS) and the mean stress (MS) criteria, in the context of the linear elastic notch fracture mechanics (LENFM). It is proved that the two combined criteria, namely the VIMC-MTS and VIMC-MS criteria, can predict well the LPF loads of the U-notched laminated composite specimens tested under mixed mode I/II loading conditions. One of the important merits of these new criteria is that the predictions of the LPF loads of the U-notched composite specimens are performed without complicated and time-wasting ply-by-ply damage analyses.

In order to reveal the failure mechanism and to predict the stress concentrations and residual strengths for single edge or central notched unidirectional laminates under tension, a shear-lag model that each lamina in laminates was divided into finite sub-elements was proposed on the basis of the shear-lag theory. Then the stress redistributions for notched unidirectional laminates under tension were analyzed and the stress concentration factors in intact fibers at root of the notch were obtained. Based on the knowledge of these stress redistributions, the tensile strengths of notched unidirectional laminates at different notch lengths were studied by using a statistical fracture theory. The present results are in a relatively good agreement with the existing experimental values.
