Abstract: The empty sella turcica is defined as the extension of the subarachnoid space toward the intrasellar region with displacement of the pituitary towards the posteroinferior wall. By autopsy studies, the incidence in the general population is around 20%. The association of Cushing's disease (CD) and empty sella has been infrequently reported. In our group, from a total of 68 patients with CD studied by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we found the presence of a primary empty sella syndrome (ESS) in 11 (16%). Of … Show more

“…The surgical outcome highly depends on tumoral characteristics and the morphological con guration of sella. Previous reports suggest more CSF leakage and hormonal dysfunction in patients with Cushing disease and ES 5 . Also, studies on patients with acromegaly have suggested those patients with coexistent ES may be less likely to bene t from transsphenoidal resection 3 .…”

“…EST syndrome is characterized by herniation of the subarachnoid space into the intrasellar space with compression of the pituitary gland into the posteroinferior wall [ 3 ]. This is likely to obscure the presence of underlying pituitary mass.…”

“…Empty sella has been detected in ACTH and GH-secreting adenomas ( 2 ). Previous reports suggest higher rates of peri-operative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage and hormonal dysfunction in corticotropic adenomas and empty sella ( 4 ). Additionally, controversy exists around the role of transsphenoidal resection in acromegaly patients with coexisting empty sella ( 5 ).…”
