Abstract: In the present work the induction of micronuclei (MNi) and nuclear abnormalities (NAs) in erythrocytes and Cu and Cd accumulation in whole body of Gambusia affinis were studied. Fish were exposed to two different Cu and Cd concentrations, 0.1 ppm and 1 ppm, for 1 and 2 weeks periods and to Cu-Cd combination (0.1 ppm Cu + 0.1 ppm Cd) for 2 weeks period using a semi-static renewal system. Micronucleus and nuclear abnormality analysis were carried out on peripheral blood erythrocytes. When fishes were exposed Cu … Show more

“…Nuclear abnormalities to be considered as precursors of micronuclei was suggested by Walia et al (2013). Guner and Muranh (2011) reported differences in the erythrocyte micronucleus frequencies to be related to cell kinetics and replacement. They explained that individual and combination exposure of fishes to heavy metals led to an accumulation in the body but this accumulation did not assure an increase in MN frequency in peripheral blood erythrocytes.…”

“…As far as nuclear abnormalities are concerned, the mechanism responsible for their formation is not fully understood. These abnormalities may complement the scoring of micronuclei (Güner & Muranli, 2011). It has been reported that nuclear abnormalities, as a defense response to prevent major detrimental effects, such as double chain breakage and generation of additional damage to the organism, are generated before micronuclei formation (Frixione & Rodríguez-Estrella, 2020).…”

“…Here, we investigated erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities between two stations and found reniform and lobed nuclei. These abnormalities might be impacts of environmental problems, such as heavy metal toxicity (such as copper and cadmium) ( Guner et al . 2011 ; Kousar & Javed 2015 ) and genotoxic damage ( Kousar & Javed 2015 ; Summak et al .…”
