Abstract: Free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production above basal levels cause irreversible damage to the cell membrane, DNA and other cellular structures by oxidizing lipids, proteins and nucleic acids resulting in dysfunction of biomolecules within cells and, finally, cell death.
