Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) has received an extensive attention from researchers due to the rapid growing and widespread of image databases. Despite the massive research efforts consumed for CBIR, the completely satisfactory results have not yet been attained. In this article, we offer a new CBIR technique that relies on extracting Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) and Maximally Stable Extremal Regions (MSER) feature descriptors as well as the color features; color correlograms and Improved Color Coherence Vector (ICCV). These features are joined and used to build a multidimensional feature vector. Bag-of-Visual-Words (BoVW) technique is utilized to quantize the extracted feature vector. Then, a multiclass Support Vector Machine (SVM) is implemented to classify the query images. The performance of the presented retrieval framework is analyzed and scrutinized by comparing it with three alternative approaches. The first one is based on extracting SURF descriptors while the second one is based on extracting SURF descriptors, color correlograms and ICCV. The third approach, on the other hand, is based on extracting MSER, color correlograms and ICCV. All implemented schemes are tested on two benchmark datasets; Corel-1000 and COIL-100 datasets. The empirical results show that our suggested approach has a superior discriminative classification and retrieval performance with respect to other approaches. The proposed method achieves average precisions of 88 and 93% for the Corel-1000 and COIL-100 datasets, respectively. Moreover, the proposed system has shown a substantial advance in the retrieval precision when compared with other existing systems.

Evidence has accumulated that, first, polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) and humoral factors such as fragments of complement components may regulate immune response, and second, PMN function is enhanced in HLA-B27-positive subjects. We therefore used a whole-blood culture technique to study lymphocyte proliferation in response to phytohaemagglutinin-P (PHA) in blood samples obtained from patients with previous yersinia arthritis and from healthy subjects with or without HLA-327. In another series of experiments, mononuclear cells were separated from peripheral blood and lymphocyte responses to Staphylococcus aureus strain Cowan I, a B e l l mitogen in fetal calf serum, and to PHA in pooled normal human serum were determined. The patients and the control subjects were always tested simultaneously. The results showed no significant differences between the subject groups. This suggests that humoral factors and enhanced neutrophil function do not exert remarkable effects on in vitro lymphocyte responses to *mitogens in HLA-B27-positive subjects.

How Do People Make Relevance Judgment of Scientific Data?

Many efforts have been made to explore user relevance judgment for documents, images, web pages and music in the field of information retrial. However, there is a lack of attention to scientific data even when scientists and researchers are facing an increasing data deluge. In this study, we carried out a two-phase (first exploratory and then empirical) research to explore relevance judgment patterns of scientific data users. In the exploratory study, we interviewed 23 subjects who participated in a national competition related to scientific data. Five relevance criteria (RC) and seven paths of their usage were identified by content analysis of the transcribed records of the interview. Based on the results of the first phase, seven hypotheses were proposed and verified by partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The study identified five RC, i.e. topicality, accessibility, authority, quality and usefulness used by scientific data users. Three patterns were identified including 1) data topicality judgment as the first step or starting point, 2) data reliability judgment as the necessary process and 3) data utility judgment as final purpose. These findings provide new understanding of relevance judgement and behaviours of scientific data users, and could benefit the design for cognitive retrieval systems and algorithms specific to scientific data.
