A 10-Year Analysis of Chromosomes in Non-Invasive Papillary Carcinoma of the Bladder

Abstract: A 10-year evaluation of chromosomal analysis of bladder tumors is reported. Emphasis is placed on the presence of chromosomal markers and their importance as prognostic indicators in patients with papillary bladder tumors.

“…46 There are few reports of PNA receptor distribution in the dog. PNA receptors have been previously described on the distal convoluted tubules and Bowman's capsule of the canine kidney,20 a finding confirmed in this study, and on the suprabasilar cells of stratified squamous epithelium in dogs and several other specie^,^^.^^ as also confirmed in the present report.…”

“…Should the patient be given an immediate cystectomy or should a more conservative approach be initially attempted? In patients who underwent transurethral resection (TUR) alone, reported survival rates ranged between 39 and 57% [5]. Adjuvant therapy (especially bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) immunotherapy) is generally recommended.…”

“…More than 90% of cells of normal human bladder epithelium were found to be diploid and no polyploidy was seen [5]. It was observed that invasive cancer tended to have a large chromosome number in comparison to the noninvasive tumors which were nearly diploid [1][2][3][4][5][6][7], As in previous reports [3,8] …”

“…Cytogenetic evaluation of the resected tumor may help to make this differentia tion possible. Tumor cell ploidy has been reported to correlate with the morphology of the tumor [2, 3, 6] and marker chromosomes have been related to the recur rence rate and prognosis [8]. Thus cytogenetic analyses have been used in recent years to attempt further eluci dation of the biological properties of tumors.…”
