A 10-Year Follow-up of a Longitudinal Study of Gallstone Prevalence at Necropsy in South East England

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine a previous increase in male gallstone disease and to consider the burden of gallstones in a necropsy study with matched controls over a decade. Gallstone prevalence in 5,050 males fell from 20.2% to 19.1% (P=0.022) and in 4,125 females fell from 30.4% to 29.0% (P=0.03). Female gallstone subjects had a higher BMI than controls 24.5 vs. 23.3 (P<0.01), but males did not. Gallstones were twice as common in diabetics, but not with coronary heart disease (CHD). A third of eld… Show more

“…determined that the incidence rate of gallstone in pregnant women was 5-12 % and stated that this ratio increased with the number of pregnancies [15,16]. In the current study, that the rate of pregnancy-based cholesterol stone was determined to be about three times higher is consistent with results in literature (Table 1) (p=0.278).…”

“…[37] MS components are related to GD, and BMI and increased age are also related to GD. [9] The increased prevalence of MS components was observed in patients undergoing cholecystectomy. [7] As GD and plaque formation have common risk factors, we investigated the relationship between these frequent diseases.…”

“…A 10-year follow-up study failed to find any relation between GD and CVD. [9] Another study mentioned the higher prevalence of MS components in patients undergoing cholecystectomy, but CVD was not increased in GD patients. [7] One study did not support any major association between ischemic heart disease and GD.…”
