A 20-year study on treating childhood infective endocarditis with valve replacement in a single cardiac center in China

Abstract: Background: Children with infective endocarditis (IE) have to undergo valve replacement instead of valve repair in China due to severe valve damage. The present study is to review our experience on surgical treatment of children with IE in reference to the incidence, pathologic status, diagnosis, surgical strategies and outcomes. Methods: We reviewed 35 patients with a mean age of 13.7±2.2 years who were underwent valve replacement surgery for IE during the period from January 1993 to December 2013. Preoperati… Show more

“…Moreover, the increased frequency of IE is strongly connected with the increased survival rate among patients with CHD. The incidence of IE has been estimated to be approximately 0.05-0.12 cases per 1,000 paediatric admissions by different centres [2][3][4][5], while the figure reported from the USA is 0.43 cases per 100,000 children [3]. The increasing prevalence of IE in the paediatric population is associated with general immune deficiency, invasive devices, and innovative surgical procedures designed for complex cyanotic CHD, especially those associated with artificial material implantation, as well as the complexity of comprehensive treatment in intensive care units.…”
