A 6-year Longitudinal Study of Self-harm and Suicidal Behaviors among Chinese Adolescents in Hong Kong

Abstract: The trajectories of self-harm and suicidal behaviors decline from early to late adolescence among Chinese adolescents. Positive youth development and constructive family functioning are critical to help reduce suicidal behaviors. Regarding increased risk, more attention should be paid to adolescent girls and adolescents from nonintact and economic disadvantaged families.

“…Some research has suggested that stressful life events, such as a single-parent family, parental death or divorce, are important risk factors for SH in adolescents [ 13 , 44 ]. Studies have also reported that adolescents from families with conflicts, non-intact families, and families with financial hardships were more likely to engage in suicide [ 18 , 19 , 45 ]. Our results indicated that family life stress events were significantly associated with SH but not with highly lethal self-harm in Chinese adolescents.…”

“…A recent 6-year cohort study took a more comprehensive approach to exploring this issue and found that several measures of positive youth development and family functioning were prospectively associated with reduced risk of suicidal behaviours among Chinese youth 25. However, only data from waves 1 and 4 were used to predict suicidal behaviours at wave 6 and the construct of positive youth development may be different across cultures due to varying beliefs, norms and values 26 27…”

“…The increase in destructive behaviour is mainly observed in adolescent girls (Haight, Marshall, Hans, Black, & Sheridan, ; Law & Shek, ). Moreover, a literature review, which indicates that the phenomena of extreme self‐destruction and aggression among adolescents are usually discussed separately, suggests a high level of similarity of risk factors for both types of behaviours.…”

“…The search for factors which encourage the development of destructive tendencies—both self‐aggressive and aggressive—among contemporary girls, is a subject increasingly analysed and commented on in scientific research. Self‐injuries and considerations of suicide are more frequent and persist for a longer period of time in adolescent girls (Law & Shek, ). Mercado, Holland, Leemis, Stone, and Wang () indicate that rates of emergency visits for self‐inflicted injury and suicidal behaviour (SB) in American girls increased repeatedly from 2008/2009 to 2015 (18.8% per year among females aged 10–14 and 7.2% per year among females aged 15–19).…”
