A 622 Mbit/s transmitter for POF-based home networks using red LED

Abstract: A high-speed 650 nm resonant-cavity light-emitting diode (RC-LED)-based transmitter for polymer optical fiber (POF) communication systems using on-ofT keying (OOK) non return-to-zero (NRZ) modulation is presented. The proposed transmitter is based on a difTerentiator circuit with an inserted threshold voltage to enhance peaking and carrier sweep-out effects. The system achieves error-free data transmissions at the rate of 622 Mbitls over 20 m step-index POF (SI-POF) and 30 m graded-index POF (GI-POF) using com… Show more

“…Avalanche photodiodes (APDs) operated in the linear mode allow to increase the sensitivity, although they are governed by excess noise [2]. Also, silicon PIN photodiodes and linear-mode APDs were used e. g. for plastic optic fiber [3], [4], [5] and free-space [6] applications. Sensitivities of −35.8 dBm, −35.5 dBm, and −32.2 dBm at 500 Mb/s, 1 Gb/s, and 2 Gb/s, respectively, with BER = 10 −9 and with 675 nm light were achieved by a 0.35 μm BiCMOS receiver with an integrated 200 μm-diameter APD and a feedback resistor of 1.5 kΩ [6].…”

“…On the other hand, the plastic optical fiber (POF) presents high modal dispersion profile and attenuation, which limits the communication link bandwidth and its length to the order of 50 MHz for 100 m [5], [6], [7]. These characteristics support using POF in the scenario of short-ranged applications such as multimedia communications, intra-vehicular devices and domestic networks [8], [9], [10], [11].…”
